I only have three fish in the tank so far: An angel and two black mollies. I also have a piece of driftwood and two plants - both anubias (nana's). My light is a Coralife 96 watt w/ 4 tubes which gives the plants plenty of light.
The substrate is your average garden variety gravel, nothing special.
Pretty sad and boring!
Here is what it looks like now after a few minor upgrades:
The biggest change is I replaced the old gravel for some Eco-complete substrate. I also bought a couple of new plants from Petsmart because I didn't want to wait and buy them online. The one in the left corner is a called an "El Nino Fern" (bolbitis heteroclita) and the others in the back are "White Ribbons" or dracaena sanderiana.
I plan on getting some Amazon Swords for the back soon so I'm sure there will be some rearranging in my future.
I also purchased a black background, also at Petsmart to match the substrate and hide the HOB filter cord and other "behind the scenes" equipment. Plus, it makes the plants and fish really pop and stand out. That airline tube has got to go! I think I'm going to get a small horizontal airstone that I can attach to the glass at the bottom and place a few sword or other tall plants to conceal it.
Ok, I got new substrate (which is most important in planted tanks I've heard) a couple of new plants and and a new background. It is still very basic of course but I think it's a good place to start. I'm going to see how the plants and fish do over the coming weeks. If everything seems to be working, I will slowly add more plants and begin to try and fill it all in.
Thanks for taking a look! As always, questions and comments are welcome.
